Robert Ball; 1918-2008, English painter, etcher, printmaker and teacher, born in Birmingham, the son of a silversmith.

Robert studied at the Birmingham College of Arts & Crafts and the Royal College of Art, he also worked as an illustrator and writer for the Birmingham Mail and The Gazette, later to become Principal of Stroud Art College teaching life drawing, anatomy and painting.

During the Second World War he was employed as a draughtsman at Charlesworths.

He was a student and teacher at the City of Birmingham University Department of Art and Design in the 1930’s completing the trio of Birmingham Painter etchers; Cowern, Freeth and Ball.

David Bernard McFall R.A.; 1919-1988, Scottish sculptor born Glasgow, McFall studied at the Junior School of Arts and Crafts in Birmingham from 1931 to 1934, In 1939 he worked as an assistant to Eric Gill, before studying at the Royal College of Art in London.

This superb etching is bright and unfaded in black ink, with fine detail and plate tone, the image measuring approximately 12 cms. x 17 cms. (x ins.) within a strong platemark and impression, on a wove paper sheet size measuring 25 cms. x 28 cms. (10 x 11 ins.)

Signed and titled by the artist with the print number 6 in pencil beneath the image.

Unframed and unmounted, blank on the reverse, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
