Robert Austin

Robert Sargent Austin, R.A., P.R.E., P.R.W.S. 1895-1973; Born in Leicester and studied at the School of Art, 1909-13, and at the Royal College of Art under Frank Short. From 1915-1919 Austin served in the trenches, and from 1922-1925 lived in Rome, then taught at the RCA. Known as an etcher, engraver and watercolourist, in 1921 Austin was elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1949.

An excellent etching which is bright and unfaded, in black ink, with superb raised intaglio ink lines, detail and very fine plate tone. The image size measuring approximately 15 cms. x 10 cms. (6 x 4 ins.) within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet 28 cms. x 23 cms. (11 x 9 ins.) with deckle edges.

Signed in the image.

Unmounted and unframed, the condition of the image and sheet is good with handling marks and toning condusive with age.
