Robert Swain Gifford

Robert Swain Gifford; 1840 –1905, American landscape painter. He was influenced by the Barbizon school. Gifford was born on Nonamesset Island, in the Elizabeth Islands, When he was two he moved with his family to the New Bedford area, and he attended public schools in New Bedford. When Gifford was a teen, the Dutch painter Albertus Van Beest arrived in New Bedford, and the two collaborated on ship paintings.

This etching has retained its excellent colouring, bright and unfaded, with superb detail and toning in dark brown ink, the image measuring approximately 20 cms. x 11 cms. (8  x ins.) printed on a chine colle applique within a strong platemark and impression on a wove paper sheet size 43 cms. x 30 cms, (17 x 12 ins.) with full margins.

Signed with the artists monogram and dated in the lower image.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
