'Madonna and Child'

An early engraving by the Braun & Cie.of the Sandro Botticelli painting.

Adolphe Braun; 1812-1877, French textile designer with a studio in Dornach, who became involved in photography in the 1850s. From the 1850s, Braun's firm, Adolphe Braun et Cie. headed by his son Gaston, became one of the world's largest publishers of reproductions of works of art. Braun et Cie. were the official photographers to Napoléon III and Pope Pius IX. Their reproductions were of works in the Louvre and the Sistine Chapel.

Sandro Botticelli; 1445-1510, was possibly a pupil of Filippo Lippi, he shows the transformation of Florentine Mediaeval art into the ideals of the Renaissance. He painted many religious works, but his most celebrated subjects are mythological. Although a favourite of Lorenzo de Medici, he died in obscurity.

This original early photogravure is bright with unfaded vibrant colours.The image measuring approximately 52 cms x 29 cms. (20½ x 11½ ins.) printed within a strong platemark and impression on a paper sheet measuring 37 cms x 61 cms. (14½ x 24 ins.) will be shipped in a large diameter tube.

Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is good, with an overall time toning and handling marks condusive with age.
