Alfred Charles Stanley Anderson; 1884-1966, British engraver, etcher and watercolour painter, studied at the Bristol School of Art, Anderson was principally known for the series of highly detailed engravings of traditional British crafts that he completed over a twenty-year period beginning in 1933. He became one of a formidable quartet of etchers and drypointists who were to achieve fame, the others being Henry Rushbury, Gerald Brockhurst, and Malcolm Osborne, young men of common purpose. They were inspired by Muirhead Bone, Francis Dodd, and William Strang, who were to the fore in the renascence of British etching.
This superb and rare etching has bright and unfaded colouring in black ink with rich raised intaglio ink lines, the image measuring approximately 26 cms. x 32 cms. (10 x 12½ ins) within a strong platemark and impression.
Printed on a laid paper sheet size 34 cms. x 40 cms. (13½ x 16 ins.) with full margins and makers watermark.
Signed and titled by the artist in ink below in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and the sheet is good with handling marks condusive with age.
