William R. Hay
William Robert Hay; 1886- born in Glasgow, spent most of his working life in London where he had a studio in Chelsea. Reknowned as an engraver, his skills as a draughtsman and painter have showed Hay to have been one of the more interesting personalities at work in Chelsea in the wake of James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Walter Greaves, exhibited at the Royal Academy, Hay studied at Westminster School of Art, later involved with both the Chelsea and Camberwell Schools of Art.
A fine etching with a rich dark blue inking, drypoint burr and plate tone, the image measuring approximately 20 cms. x 18 cms. (8 x 7 ins.) within a strong impression and platemark on a laid paper sheet, size 29 cms. x 27 cms. (11½ x 11 ins.) with makers watermark.
Signed in pencil by the artist beneath the image.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age
