William R. Hay
William Robert Hay; 1886-1964 born in Glasgow, spent most of his working life in London where he had a studio in Chelsea. Reknowned as an engraver, his skills as a draughtsman and painter have showed Hay to have been one of the more interesting personalities at work in Chelsea in the wake of James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Walter Greaves, exhibited at the Royal Academy, Hay studied at Westminster School of Art, later involved with both the Chelsea and Camberwell Schools of Art.
A fine etching printed in dark brown ink with fine detail and plate tone, the image measuring approximately 32 cms. x 25 cms. (12½ x 10 ins.) within a strong impression and platemark on a laid paper sheet, size 36 cms. x 29 cms. (14¼ x 11½ ins.) with makers watermark.
Signed in the image and in pencil by the artist with the title in the lower margin.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is very good with handling marks condusive with age.
