Winston Megoran F.R.S.A 1913-1971, Marine painter, etcher and illustrator. Winston was born in Newcastle on Tyne, he exhibited his paintings and etchings nationwide and at the R. A. along with his contemporaries; Norman Wilkinson, Frank Mason and Montague Dawson.
Winston paintings were utilised to illustrate many magazines including the Yachting Monthly, The Navy, The Sphere, Pictorial Education, The Fleet, War Weekly and the Eagle. His book jacket designs were employed by many of the publishing houses and he also supplied all the paintings for the Puffin Book of Ships in 1952.
As a Flight Lieutenant in the R. A. F. during the Second World War, he was seconded to the Admiralty in London to provide illustrations for official publications and ship recognition books. After the war Winston Megoran moved to Weymouth with his family where he had a studio overlooking Portland Harbour.
A superbly atmospheric aquatint etching, printed in coloured inks, the image measuring 34 cms. x 24 cms.(13½ x 9½ ins.) within a strong platemark and impression, on a wove paper sheet size 38 cms. x 29 cms. (15 x 11½ ins.)
Signed and titled by the artist in pencil, the sheet also carries an embossed ‘Rembrandt Guild, Artists Proof’ blindstamp.
Unframed and unmounted, the condition of the image and sheet is excellent, with handling marks condusive with age.
